Built n 1865, this is one of the finest Victorian gothic manor houses in the South West, set amid 60 acres of formal gardens, grazing and woodland. The owner engaged us to restore the property to its former glory as a private country residence, full of luxury yet casual elegance, so that visitors could feel both cosseted and at home. We achieved this by merging old and new, mixing elegant and quirky contemporary design and the owners’ eclectic furniture collection with pieces we sourced in Europe, America, and Africa, to create a distinctive look which fulfilled the clients’ brief to create luxurious comfort in eccentric style.

Old Down Manor has a colorful history and the current owners had a vision of ‘luxury yet casual elegance’. They wanted any guests to feel welcome and relaxed the moment they stepped through the door.

Each room within the manor was vastly different. The colour palette used throughout varies wildly, from mustard, to royal blue, to deep, vibrant reds to black. The quirky features including dog lampshades and union jack cushions added a cheeky element to this home which has bags of character.

We refurbished many antique finds using local craftsman and using luxurious chenilles and velvet fabrics to give a boutique feel to the manor.

Liberal use of old woods and distressed leather bring a masculine element which is then softened with warm colours.

We worked closely with local craftsman to commission new furniture and to refurbish existing pieces that the client had collected on their many travels. We sourced interesting antique furniture from suppliers in the UK, Europe and even as far afield as America.
